Choosing a Suitable Name for a New Restaurant

In the rush to research and set up a new restaurant, entrepreneurs often fail to give a serious amount of thought towards naming their new restaurant. A great name will be the foundation of your business branding strategy and will determine customer perceptions of your restaurant.

A great name will help to get people in the door and once they have left it should leave enough of an impression on them so that they remember it when it comes to telling friends about it. Here are some tips for choosing a winning name when you open up your new restaurant.

1) Try to come up with a name that will appeal to the market that you are trying to target. Your name could be sophisticated, exotic, humorous or simple and practical depending on the people that you are trying to attract.

2) When it come to a name you may consider something that is relevant to your location, theme or type of food. Just remember that if you want to expand into more than one restaurant using the same name then using wording relevant to your location may not be a good way to go. The name should immediately let customers know the type of food and the experience that they can expect if they choose to eat in your restaurant.

3) Don’t limit your potential by including your personal name in your restaurant’s name or by including the area where the restaurant is located. You may want to sell your business or open other branches in the future and you don’t want the name to limit your future prospects at all.

4) Get inspired by restaurant names in other cities and countries rather than those in your area so that you come up with something that won’t get mixed up with the names of other nearby restaurants. Ensure that you have full legal rights to use the name.

5) Take immediate action to register an appropriate domain name for your restaurant’s website.

6) Businesses usually want names that are easy to pronounce, although this rule doesn’t always apply to restaurants and foreign, exotic sounding names can work really well if they are suited to your target market. Your name should be easy to remember to help you stand out in a crowded market.

7) Consider hiring a naming expert. This will be an additional expense but may not be as silly as it sounds. The perfect name will be one of the factors leading to your restaurant’s popularity and if you are entering a competitive market then expert help may end up being cost effective.

Lastly, you should go with a name that you will be proud to be working with, something that inspires you to get out of bed every day and achieve your goals. Your restaurant name has to be a good match with you, as the owner as well as with your patrons.
