Tenzin Namdag Makes Great Strides With Prison Spiritualism

For many years the only religion allowed in the prison of Queensland was Christianity. Today, in response to the inmates request, the first Buddhist chaplain has been allowed to enter the prisoners and teach Buddhism to the prisoners.

Buddhism in the prison system is an attempt to assist those that have made a mistake. It teaches them peace and tranquility, tools that they will need to have when they are integrating back into the general population. Besides this, Buddhism will also assist the prisoners to better handle their current living situation and life circumstances.

Buddhism assists the prisoners to explore other options to deal with anger and personal issues. All these skills will not only assist them with dealing with life in prison, but in the world outside the prison walls as well. Buddhism is about finding a way to your spiritual path, as opposed to a strict religion.

Since beginning her visits to the prison, Namdag has found an acceptance and respect that is difficult to obtain in any community. Prisoners pass the word and the message on to other prisoners and the Buddhism practices inside the prison continue to grow.

In addition to her regular visits to the prison, Namdag also works with the prisoners on issues through written correspondence, helping them find the guidance and peace that they need to put their lives back on track. Overall, the prison officials as well as Namdag have found that this program has been extremely successful and helpful to those prisoners who truly want to find their way through religion in ways different from the Christian teachings. This program will continue as long as the prisoner’s continue to show interest in Buddhism.
