As parent, we do not like to see our baby getting sick. We try to protect them from diseases. But parents should also know that babies can also contact yeast infection, most especially in their mouth. Yeast infection is in fact a common childhood sickness.
Yeast infection can easily occur in babies because they lack protective bacteria in their mouth. Thus, thrush or oral yeast infection is common in babies. Once your baby contacted this infection, this can be irritating for them. Thus, it is essential that you try to prevent the occurrence of thrush in your baby.
Thrush can cause irritation and discomfort to your babies. This is the reason that babies cry a lot when they have this infection. Thrush is usually characterized by the presence of white patches in the baby’s mouth and the sides of their mouth.
Similar to adult yeast infections, thrush in babies is also caused by the overgrowth of the fungus, Candida albicans or yeast. This fungus is naturally occurring in all human bodies: babies or adults, healthy or sick. Their presence in the body is not really a problem until they start overgrowing and causes infection.
Babies can acquire yeast infection due to several factors. One is the intake of antibiotics. This is because babies do not have enough good bacteria in their body and when they take in antibiotics, they kill these good bacteria. Thereby, this allows harmful bacteria like yeast to fluorish and cause yeast infection.
Another factor that can lead to the development of yeast infection in babies is the mother. Due to hormonal imbalance during pregnancy, mothers are also prone to yeast infection. And once they get yeast infection and not treat it well or they were not able to treat it, they can transfer the infection to their babies during childbirth. This is because the baby may swallow some of the secretions in the birth canal and this may include yeast infection. Thus, pregnant mothers have to make sure that when they experience yeast infection during their pregnancy, they have to be totally cure from the infection before childbirth.
And believe it or not, yeast infection can also be contacted through the breast milk. But mothers have to be cautious in determining where the infection comes from. This might be due to other factors and not breast milk. Remember that breast milk is the best medicine for infections in babies as this contains pro-biotic that will help increase your babies protection against harmful bacteria like yeast.
Yeast infection can also be prevented by considering places where the infection can occur. For example, infection in the diaper area can be prevented by ensuring that the baby is dry at all times. Diaper should not stay too long before changing and allowing fresh air on the baby’s bottom when removing the diaper. And when there is presence of yeast infection, a mild anti-fungal cream would help solve this problem.
